Weight gain is much slower during this phase because of the higher caloric content of fat and can be realized only if intake is in excess of caloric expenditure. In most individuals, the phase ends with a gradual return to the previously normal body weight the patient who is partially immobilized during this period of time, however, may exhibit a marked gain in weight due to decreased energy expenditure. Base-Line Requirements :The normal caloric and protein requirements for individuals leading a sedentary life approximate 1 Gm of protein and 35 kcal/kg of body weight, or approximately 1400 kcal/rn” of body surface area per day.
