 One site that has blown up a lot over a short period of time is obviously twitter. You can see that there are various lists of twitter tools they show you all the different ways you can use twitter. One of the smart thing they did is that they created an application programming interface so that anyone could tie into twitter. Facebook also did this a long time ago which allowed many people to create applications so that the site became even more powerful and people enjoyed it even more.
